Korg microKORG Portable Synth/Vocoder Overviews

Korg has introduced a portable synthesizer offering a variety of tools for performers, producers, computer musicians and beginners alike. The new microKORG delivers modeling synthesis, vocoding, real-time control, on-board effects, and external audio processing, plus Korg’s sound at an affordable price. The microKORG’s 37-mini-key compact chassis also makes it ideal for the musician or DJ working in a limited-space environment.

I don’t have much room but wanted a Synth that would also provide MIDI control functions within my cramped PC work area. I lowered a hidden keyboard drawer under my desk that I wasn’t using, and it fit there out of the way. When I go to pull it out, I had to clamp the wires with some “give” so it won’t get pulled off the back. Due to its size, it’s very convenient with my PC keyboards and monitors just above it. I got the PDF version of the manual, which was easier to read and also allowed me to magnify it (for my poor eyes). It sat above me on my computer screen while I learned to use the MicroKorg.

I’d of never been able to do this with anything bigger. The keyboard is small, but is almost better since I’m using it as a controller and not really trying to “Play”. The effects do sound good and are easy to learn, but the Vocoder is a bit fuzzy. However, I’ve already started editing that and have cleaned it up to be a more recognizable human vocal, so I’m sure I can get it where I want it. I’d recommend this product. It is beautiful to look at, with real wood ends. It’s no accident it’s appearance is a clone of the original Moog Synths. I think that’s why it caught my eye. Korg knows what they are doing when it comes to design. But don’t get me wrong, it’s not all looks. There’s professional effects inside and it’s one heck of a lot easier to use than the original Moog.

Korg’s Masterpiece of the 2000’s – Matthew Comegys – Ueda, Nagano, Japan
This has already become one of the classic boards of this decade. As far as virtual analogs go, it pales only to the far more expensive Nord Leads and Roland JP-8000. It acts as a fine entry level synth and is still pretty useful should you delve deeper into the world of synthesis. I now have several true analog synths, but I still visit this one for its organ tones and the awesome vocoder. It’s an extremely versitile machine, and if you take the time to program it you’ll find myriad sounds at your finger tips. I would suggest that you go with this older version of the MicroKorg. There is now a MicroKorg XL out there for sale, but it is basically just a redressed Korg R3. I would recommend the R3 if you have an extra 0 in pocket – or the Korg MS2000 whose engine this version of the MicroKorg shares.

You’ve seen half the bands out there today with a MicroKorg with them on stage, and there’s a reason for that. This is an extremely portable, battery-powered machine that I’ve puttered around with in places Starbucks or airport terminals besides the obvious home usage.

The MicroKorg is definitely the best ‘bang-for-your-buck’ that you’ll find in the world of synthesizers, be you a novice or an experienced musician looking for a few new sounds to add to your palette.

Great bang for your buck! – L. Hyde – Seattle, WA
I am not a professional musician, I am a novice who like to goof around with sounds on my spare time. I live in a smaller one bedroom apartment with a room mate and a dog, so size was important to me when picking out a synth. I just picked up this microkorg at Guitar Center for the same price listed here (379.99, currently) as I figured the price couldn’t be beat. With 37 keys, 6 waveforms, an 8 band vocoder, and the wide range of patches and settings on this gem, you will be making an endless array of songs. I am a big fan of weighted keys, but I quickly adjusted to the size and feel of the smaller micro keys. Like another reviewer suggested, go play with one at your local shop and see if its a fit for you. I definitely recommend it!

Just buy it. – Jason V – pottsville, pa United States
I’ve been doing electronic music now for a while in a home setup, i have a korg trinity DRS V3 and an X5. I just got this Microkorg yesterday and will never part with it ! it has the sounds i love. i replaced my broken DW8000 years back with my X5 and never really cared for it, my DW was irreplaceable, or so i thought. This microkorg fills the empty space it left and adds on to it ! a MUST for techno/electronica or anything in between, i waited WAY too long and was really missing out.
If you have been eyeing this one up stop, and just BUY IT!! you wont regret it.

MicroKORG – Synth for my band – T. Blais – New Bedford, Massacusetts USA
I use this Korg almost everyday at band practice. It’s a great, portable synth. I love using it and it produces amazing quality.

I really like when people ask about it since it’s such a cool product and is small enough to carry around with me.

I highly recommend this to anyone.
Esspecially if you’re looking to get your first synth, because it is small and reasonably priced.
